Padstones

Padstones are used to distribute the load from a point load or concentrated load to a wider area of a masonry or concrete structure.  Usually, they are manufactured from concrete or steel and are placed beneath elements like beams columns or other heavy loads.  This helps prevent excessive stress, or damage to the supporting structure. 

The shape and size of the padstone can be worked out by a structural engineer.  The calculation looks at the magnitude of the load, the supporting structure, and the material properties. 

Padstones are usually manufactured from concrete, steel, or stone.  Concrete padstone are pre-cast and are available in a range of standard shapes and sizes.
