Manhole covers are removable plates or lids that cover access chambers.  They are designed to be heavy and sturdy to prevent accidental removal.  They are usually manufactured from cast iron or reinforced plastic.  

They are available in a variety of shapes, with round or square being the most common.  Manhole covers are grouped into weight classes based on their load-bearing capacity.
