Engineering bricks are used in both civil engineering and general construction.  The bricks characteristics makes them well suited for load-bearing and structural applications.  This type of brick is made from dense material and is fired at high temperatures which makes them extremely durable.  They have high compressive strength and can withstand heavy loads without deforming.  

As well as strength, engineering bricks have low water absorption, usually less than 4% to 7%.  This helps resistance to frost damage.
