When it comes to painting the outside of your home, the choice of exterior paint and wood stain products can be confusing. Here’s a quick guide to help you make the right decision.
You have four main options to choose from when treating exterior wood: paint, wood stain, oil and varnish. Our range of products showcases many which are formulated specifically for certain areas or finishes. Check out the full range before making your purchase.
Exterior wood paint
Paint can give a nice splash of opaque colour and the range of colours available is huge. Most exterior wood paint is quick drying and designed to withstand the elements. This means there is little need to repaint your home’s exterior too often.
Exterior wood stain
Wood stain allows the natural grain of the wood to show through while still providing colour. The stain soaks into the wood, providing protection from the elements. Wood stain is ideal for use on decking.
Exterior wood oil
Wood oils are designed to provide the wood with nourishment to replace natural oils removed by weathering. Perfect for decking, oils help to protect the deck from damage by foot traffic.
Exterior wood varnish
Wood varnish offers a high level of protection with a beautiful, natural finish. Because varnish is transparent, it allows the wood grain to show through and can also be applied over pre-stained wood.
Exterior masonry paint
Masonry paint can be used on brick, pebbledash, cement, stucco, concrete and stone. This type of paint is formulated to give protection to exterior house walls and other structures. Masonry paint comes in a wide variety of shades to suit the theme of your décor.
Types of exterior paint finish
There are several different types of exterior paint for both wood and masonry.
- a matt finish that gives a flat, non-reflective look perfect for hiding uneven surfaces
- a smooth finish that has a creamy formulation that’s easy and quick to apply to large areas
- textured finish masonry paint that gives durable coverage perfect for hiding fine cracks and uneven surfaces
- a gloss finish that is shiny and reflective, perfect for exterior doors and windowsills
Features of exterior paint
As well as the different finishes available, exterior paints have a variety of features, allowing you to choose the perfect product for the specific area you are decorating.
Washable paint allows you to quickly wipe down grubby doors and windowsills without damaging the paint. You can also buy self-cleaning paint that is formulated to allow rainwater to wash away any dirt. Some areas of your home’s exterior may be vulnerable to algae and mould. Choose a paint that is resistant to these pests.
Some exterior paints contain UV protection so that the paint won’t fade and lose its colour over time. These paints are perfect for south-facing parts of your home that enjoy a lot of direct sunlight. Choose a water/moisture resistant paint for porous areas of masonry that could be damaged by water ingress.
If you’re concerned that intruders may try to climb drainpipes or walls to gain access to your home, you might want to consider using an anti-climb exterior paint.
