Decorating your patio

Whether your property has an existing patio or you’re planning on laying one, the outdoor space is great for entertaining guests and becomes a relaxing haven during long summer days. There are many ways in which you can really bring your patio to life - using furniture, plants, lighting and more - so here’s a few ideas for inspirational garden decoration…

Roll out the furniture

The right furniture can transform your patio from bare slabs into an outdoor room, but be sure to do your research. Check sizing carefully, in order to avoid items that are too large or too small for your space, and be sure to choose tables and chairs that suit both the patio itself and the design of your home.

All-weather furniture is a must, using materials that can withstand the unpredictable British climate, and many ranges actually include cushions that are designed to repel moisture. You may also wish to opt for a patio umbrella or canopy, allowing you to enjoy the shade as much as the sunshine.
Lighting and heating your patio

Let there be lights (and heat)

As well as increasing home security and safety, lighting can also play a role in making your patio look magical on warm evenings. Whether you choose low voltage electrical lighting, solar powered variations or even candlelit lanterns, there are plenty of choices on offer.

Patio heaters also help ensure you can use your outdoor space all year round, with floor-standing, wall-mounted and table-top options all available. Some are more environmentally-friendly than others, with electric versions reportedly producing 85% less CO2 emissions compared to gas.

Plan for plants

Whether you’re looking to grow herbs, flowers, succulents or any other potted plants, your patio is a great place to do so. Not only will you add colour and personality to your slabs, but they’ll be close at hand for watering and you can choose a style that suits.

While plain terracotta pots will appeal to some, others may prefer a range of different materials, shapes and sizes to give their patio real individuality. Consider using metal pots, wooden planters and even recycled household items, such as watering cans and wooden crates - just ensure that the drainage is adequate before planting. You’ll find some unique upcycled planter ideas here, including old chairs, tin cans and more.

There’s plenty more that you can do to make your patio your own: water features, soft furnishings, and fire pits can all help stamp a mark on your outside space. Take a look at our Pinterest boards for more inspiration.
